Sub-resolution display window

This display feature (new to TransGen version 3.2) is accessed from ViewGen Edit menu and opens a smaller pop-up window to display a 3D view of a selected fault trace.

The window allows the user to view the sub-resolution changes in structure and calculated transmissibilites for selected fault trace(s) made while using the Include fault drag and hierarchical zone effects option for a "Flexible" TransGen project. So for a selected trace, the 3D data displayed will include the Stack of cells on either side of the trace together with the stubs and ramp for any fault zone attached to it (see the section on Traces and Fault zones for details).

With the fault traces displayed in the main ViewGen window (Show traces option toggled "on"), click on the Sub-resolution display... option in the Edit menu to open the pop-up window.



When the Sub-resolution display window is accessed for the first time from ViewGen, it will initially be empty (as shown above) until a trace is selected in the main ViewGen viewer window.

To load data into (or update the contents of) the Sub-resolution display window, position the cursor over a trace in the main ViewGen window and left-click the mouse while holding down the Control key. The data associated with the selected trace (the Stack of cells on either side of the trace together with the stubs and ramp for any fault zone attached to it ) will be displayed in the 3D viewer window (as shown below). Unlike the main ViewGen window, which always and only shows geometrical and property characteristics of the parent model, the Sub-resolution display only shows geometrical characteristics of the user-defined geometries associated with a trace.



The 3D view in the Sub-resolution display window can be manipulated in a similar way to the parent model in the main ViewGen window by using the mouse to rotate and translate the view:-

    <MB1> Rotates the model. Click+drag rotates the model about its centre. Drag to left or right to rotate the model about the screen's vertical axis, drag up or down to rotate about the screen's horizontal axis.
    <MB2> Zooms the model. Click and drag down to zoom in. Click and drag upwards to zoom out.
    <MB3> Pans the model. Click and drag the mouse to move the model in the desired direction.

When the display is updated (by picking another trace in the main window) any translations are reset and the view returns to the centre of the display. Any rotation of the view is preserved between updates. Layers (Cell lyrs) can be turned on and off in the same way as in the Cell Controls dialog box; changes to the layer display are activated by pressing the Apply button on the Sub-resolution display window.

Connected cells option

The default display in the Sub-resolution display window (described above) is obtained when the Connected cells option in the window is "off".

Toggle the Connected cells option "on" to visualise all the cells connected to a highlighted cell. The first time this option is selected, the uppermost layer in stack 1 is coloured white and highlighted by thick black lines (as shown below in Initial "Connected cells" display). All cells in Stacks 1 and 2 that are connected to the highlighted cell through the fault zone are coloured according to their final transmissibility (i.e. including all relevant fault rock effects) and all cells in Stacks 1 and 2 not connected to it are coloured white (the stub cells and the fault zone itself are always coloured white).

NOTE:- If the Fault Properties were not calculated in the current run (i.e. the Do not calculate fault properties option is toggled "on" via the Miscellaneous Options page of WizGen), no transmissibilities will have been calculated and the connected cells are just shown coloured black.

Different cells can be highlighted by positioning the cursor over the cell of interest and clicking the right mouse button (as shown below with another cell selected).

The Connected cells functionality is also available for sub-resolution displays on traces that do not contain fault zones, however in this case same-stack vertical non-neighbour connections are never produced (see "Connected cells" display for model without a fault zone).

The colours used in the "connected cells" display are generated by the same colour table used to display "Average faulted transmissibility" on the faults in the main ViewGen window (see Colourmap for faulted transmissibilities below). Some cells may be coloured to indicate they are outside the colour table limits. The default limits of the colour table are assigned based on the upper and lower limits present for fault connections in the parent model, while the upper and lower limits present on the trace being visualised, are reported on the sub-resolution display window.

In some cases, it may be necessary to reset the limits of the colour table (accessed by selecting  faulted transmissibility / average from the Fault properties pull-down menu and then selecting Fault colours from the Edit menu) resetting the limits and saving it. Pressing the Apply button in the Sub-resolution display window will then update the display to reflect the new colour table.
